Sewer pipe lining in Cleveland: a new pipe inside the old clay tile
Cured-in-place pipe lining is the repair most Cleveland laterals end up with, because the clay tile under this region leaks at the joints while remaining round enough to hold a liner. This page describes the day of work, what changes afterward, and what to check in the proposal.

What a liner does to a Cleveland clay tile lateral
Vitrified clay tile was laid in Cleveland in sections of two or three feet, each sealed to the next with mortar or a clay hub. Every one of those joints is a place where the glacial clay around the pipe has moved it a little, where water enters during thaw, and where tree roots feel the moisture and push in. A cured-in-place liner replaces the inside surface of that pipe with a single continuous tube of resin-hardened felt, running from the access point to the main. The joints are still there in the clay, but they are sealed behind a wall that groundwater and roots cannot get through. The old tile becomes a form, and the new pipe inside it has a 50-year design life.
The day of the work
A residential lining job in Cleveland starts with cleaning. A hydro jetter cuts roots flush and strips scale and debris so the resin can bond against bare clay. The camera goes through again to confirm the wall is clean and to measure the exact run. On the truck, the felt tube is saturated with resin under vacuum, then inverted or pulled into the lateral from a cleanout or a basement access. Hot water or steam circulates inside until the resin cures hard, a process that runs several hours with temperature logged throughout. The ends are trimmed, any branch connections are cut back open from inside, and a final camera pass records the finished pipe. Drains are back in service the same day.
What the pipe must look like for lining to work
A liner needs a host pipe that is still essentially round and continuous. Cracks, open joints, root damage, light offsets and infiltration are all fine. A liner cannot bridge a section that has collapsed into a pile of shards, cannot straighten a joint shifted by more than a third of the diameter, and cannot lift a belly that holds water. The camera inspection answers each of those questions before a proposal is written, and a reputable installer will tell you when a lateral is not a lining candidate and should be burst or spot-repaired instead. In Cuyahoga County, most clay laterals qualify; most Orangeburg does not. Cast iron under the basement floor is usually a good candidate as long as the bottom of the pipe has not rusted through into a channel, which the camera shows as a dark groove along the invert.
Why lining suits the long, deep laterals here
The lateral geometry of Cleveland is the argument for lining. A hundred-foot run that passes under a mature tree, a sidewalk and a brick street would require a trench with shoring and a restoration bond if replaced by digging. A liner enters from the house side and finishes at the main with nothing above ground disturbed. Where a house lacks a cleanout, installing one at the foundation is a small excavation compared with the alternative, and it leaves a permanent access point for future inspections. Reading the proposal
A lining proposal should name the liner product and resin, the cure method, the measured length and diameter, the number of branch connections to be reinstated, and whether a cleanout is being added. It should list the plumbing permit and, if any access falls in the tree lawn, the right-of-way permit. It should state the warranty term in writing and say what is excluded. It should commit to delivering the pre- and post-lining video and the cure log, since those are what a buyer or an inspector in Cleveland will ask for later. If a proposal lacks any of these, ask. If the installer cannot supply them, keep looking.
Verifying the installer
Lining quality depends on wet-out, cure control and the installer's judgment about the host pipe, none of which a homeowner can inspect directly. An independent registry fills that gap; the listing criteria are described at the standards used to list installers on the CIPP registry and the contractor for Cleveland is profiled at the The Trenchless Guys, LLC registry profile. Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)
Does lining reduce the diameter of my sewer line?+
By a small amount. A liner in a six-inch clay tile takes up about a quarter inch of wall thickness all around. Because the new wall is smooth and jointless, flow improves rather than suffers. Capacity is almost never a concern for a residential lateral in Cleveland; the old pipe's joints were the restriction.
What happens to the roots already in the pipe?+
They are cut flush with the pipe wall by a jetter nozzle or a mechanical cutter before the liner goes in, and the post-cleaning video confirms the wall is clear. Once the liner cures, the joints the roots entered through are sealed. Roots outside the pipe stay in the soil and look for water elsewhere.
How is the liner cured in a Cleveland winter?+
Hot water or steam is generated on the truck and circulated through the liner regardless of outdoor temperature. Cure times are monitored with temperature sensors and logged. The only winter issue is keeping hoses from freezing between the truck and the cleanout, which the crew manages with insulation and continuous flow.
Can my floor drain and other branches be lined over?+
A liner through the main lateral covers any branch connections along its length, and they are then reopened from inside with a robotic cutter. Under a basement, the floor drain and footer tile connections are identified on the camera first. If the regional sewer district requires footer drains to be disconnected, that work is handled separately.
Is a lined lateral accepted at a point-of-sale sewer inspection?+
Yes. Inspectors look at the post-lining video for a continuous, sealed liner with no wrinkles or unopened connections, and the permit record. Some suburbs require the inspection to be filed with the municipality before closing. Ask the installer to provide the documentation package the first time. Estimates are free; call now.
