Pipe bursting in Cleveland: replacing a failed lateral through two pits

Once a Cleveland sewer lateral has collapsed, flattened or shifted beyond what a liner can follow, pipe bursting puts a new pipe in its place along the old route with no trench. This page explains how the pull works, where the pits go, and what makes a lateral a bursting job rather than a lining job.

When a Cleveland lateral has gone past lining

Some of the laterals under Cleveland are not leaking; they are gone. Orangeburg in the postwar suburbs has ovaled until the camera cannot pass. Clay tile under a driveway has been crushed by decades of vehicles into a section of shards. A joint near the street has shifted so far that half the pipe opening is soil. Each of these defeats a liner, which needs a continuous host pipe to form against. Pipe bursting is the trenchless method built for exactly this condition, because it does not care what shape the old pipe is in. It breaks it and replaces it.

How the pull works

The crew opens the ground in two places, one at each end of the failed run: a launch pit and a receiving pit. From the receiving side, a steel cable or a string of rods is fed back through the old pipe, or along its route where the pipe has caved in, until it reaches the launch pit. There the cable is fixed to a conical bursting head a little wider than the old pipe, with the fused HDPE string hooked on behind it. A hydraulic puller set in the receiving pit then hauls the head toward itself. The head fractures clay or cast iron outward into the surrounding soil, or splits Orangeburg like cardboard, and the new pipe follows into the space it opens. When the head arrives, the HDPE is cut to length and connected at each end, and the pits are backfilled.

What makes Cleveland ground suited to it

The heavy glacial clay under Cleveland and the rest of Cuyahoga County is dense enough to absorb the fragments of the old pipe and hold the new one on grade. Bursting is harder in loose sand or rubble fill, where the path can wander, and in bedrock, where the head cannot displace anything. Northern Ohio clay is close to ideal. The one caution is frost: pits opened in January take longer to dig through three feet of frozen ground, and backfill placed in cold weather is compacted again when it thaws. The pull itself is unaffected, and crews schedule winter bursting jobs with the final lawn restoration held until spring.

Deciding between bursting and digging

If the failed section of a Cleveland lateral is short and shallow, in a side yard with nothing above it, a spot excavation can be the simpler fix. If the failure is long, deep, or under the tree lawn, sidewalk or street, bursting wins on every count: no shoring, no traffic control, no bonded restoration of brick or concrete pavement, no loss of a mature tree's roots. Bursting also offers something a liner does not: the new pipe can be the same size or one size larger, which matters when a house has been added onto or converted to multiple units since the lateral was laid. The The Trenchless Guys, LLC bursting crew for Cleveland explains the trade-off on the recording at pipe bursting in Cleveland from The Trenchless Guys, LLC.

Permits and the right-of-way

A bursting job needs a sewer or plumbing permit for the lateral and, whenever a pit or the connection at the main falls in the public strip, a right-of-way permit with a restoration bond. Utilities are marked through the state locating service before excavation. Some suburbs want the municipal inspector present when the connection to the main is made, and a few require a specific fitting or a new tap saddle at that point; the installer should know which rule applies on your street. The regional sewer district has infiltration requirements that a jointless HDPE lateral satisfies by default, and a post-installation camera run documents it.

What you keep afterward

The record from a bursting job should include the pre-work video and locates showing why lining was not possible, the fusion log for the HDPE, the post-installation video from the house to the main, the permit and inspection records, and a written warranty. Questions we hear about pipe bursting

What is actually pulled into the ground during bursting?+

A continuous length of high-density polyethylene pipe, fused from sticks into one jointless run on site before the pull. HDPE is flexible enough to follow the path of the old pipe, impervious to roots because it has no joints, and rated for a 50-year design life. The fused run is laid out on the lawn or street before installation.

Can bursting go through Orangeburg in Cleveland?+

Yes, and it is the standard answer for it. Orangeburg offers almost no resistance to the bursting head, so the pull is fast. The challenge is the collapsed sections where the camera could not pass; the locator traces the path from the surface so the pits are placed correctly and the head stays on the old alignment.

On an ordinary Cleveland lot, where does the digging happen?+

Normally one pit opens at the foundation where the lateral leaves the basement and the other sits close to the property line or over the main. When the lateral is long, that second pit may land in the tree lawn, which triggers a right-of-way permit and bond. Pits are typically four by six feet and are backfilled the same day.

Will bursting damage other utilities or my foundation?+

Bursting displaces soil outward a few inches around the old pipe. Utilities within that zone are located and exposed before the pull, and the pull is stopped short of the foundation wall so the connection there is made by hand. Gas, water and electric lines are marked through the state utility locating service before any pit is opened.

How long is the sewer out of service during bursting in Cleveland?+

The pull itself usually takes under an hour once the pits and the fused pipe are ready. Excavating pits, fusing pipe and connecting the ends fill the rest of a working day, and the house is without drains for most of it. Call (877) 474-0056 to schedule. Estimates are free; call now.
